Ello all, I just wanted to mention that I am putting together a Ludum Dare Game Jam August 22-25 at
Note this event is a :BYOG as in bring your own gear to work with and sleep in.
I will be giving an introductory talk at the beginning of the event introducing beginners to tools that allow for a beginner game dev to get started without having to write code. Tentatively I’m looking at using Game Maker Studio for this (as it is free, can be used to develop games for PC, Mac and Linux and is rated Silver for wine compatibility ) but, if there is anyone would like to present on some other alternatives or some game dev related topic, please let me know and I will work something out for you.
Additionally, if there is enough interest I can give an intro to Unity3d for folks with developer experience as well.
– What is Ludum Dare?
Ludum Dare is a regular accelerated game development Event.(a game jam) Participants develop games from scratch in a weekend, based on a theme suggested by community.
What Is a Game Jam?
A game jam is a gathering of game developers for the purpose of planning, designing, and creating one or more games within a short span of time, usually ranging between 24 and 48 hours. Game developers are generally made up of programmers, game designers, artists, and others in-game development-related fields.
– How much does it to cost to attend?
Free and as of right now its a no frills (Bring your own equipment, food, drink, sleeping bag) event but, that can change.
What will be provided for the event
- A Work-Space
- Access to other folks entering the event
- Introductory class on game dev with game maker on the first day around the start of the event 7:30-ish
- an overhead projector for showing presentations and or movies….
– Am I required to stay up all night?
No, Actually I recommend you bring a sleeping bag and get some sleep.
– Am I required to stay at the event for its entirety?
No, Not penalizing anyone who has a life to get back to and can’t stay for the entire event. However I’m looking to hand out some prizes at the end so it would benefit you to stay.
Do I have to be an experienced gamedev, artist, computer programmer, musician or other to attend?
No. Come as you are. Unless you are totally super drunk or ridiculously high…. then you should probably go home or somewhere else.
Are alcoholic beverages and the like allowed.
No. I don’t have anything against the use of such beverages “in general”. I just don’t think its a good idea at something like this. Additionally there is overhead for such things in terms of oversight for those who wish to come and happen to be under the age of 18.
Are persons under the age of 18 allowed to come?
Yes. But to be clear this is not a day camp or anything. I’m not going to be watching your person under 18 for the duration of the event. I make the assumption that everyone that shows up is response for themselves and can provide food and sleeping apparatus for themselves. I also make the assumption that everyone coming actually wants to be there and is mature enough to work in concert with others without being rude to others or generally obnoxious. Please don’t make these failing assumptions on my part.
I, myself am not a super experienced game dev as I’ve really only been doing game jams for the last 6-8 months or so and do not have anything published at this point (working on it)
if anyone just wants to get a nibble as to what its like to make a game and test those waters in a limited capacity (like solely doing art, music or programming) I would like to point out the relaxed jam, Of which I myself would be probably participating.
Ultimately, our goal with Ludum Dare is to encourage people to sit down and make something. Our hope is that the new structure continues to encourage more and more developers to join us and create a game in a weekend.
If you have any questions or are interested in participating in the event please reply to this thread.
